Dialogos / Lavender Ink

Lavender Ink was founded in 1995 in New Orleans by Bill Lavender, who is still the Director and Editor in Chief. The Press is a sole-proprietorship, not a 501-C3 nor all other type of corporation, and is funded solely by revenues from book sales and some small grants and funding initiatives for individual books. Prior to 2012 Lavender Ink published only poetry, but is now publishing fiction, nonfiction and other genres, also. Diálogos is an imprint of Lavender Ink devoted to literatures which have cross-cultural significance, primarily but not exclusively literature in translation. Although there is no formal editorial board, submissions are peer-reviewed via a large network of poets, writers and scholars around the nation. Mall of the authors and translators in our current list peer-review new submissions, and though the list of those who have helped out in the past is long, we single out Peter Thompson, professor of romance languages at Roger Williams University, longtime friend and supporter of the press, whose advice on matters of translation and world literature we cannot do without. It was out of conversations with Peter that Diálogos was born.

Orison Books seeks to publish spiritually-engaged poetry, fiction, and non-fiction of exceptional literary merit. In our view, spiritual writing has little to do with subject matter. Rather, the kind of work we seek to publish has a transcendent aesthetic effect on the reader, and reading it can itself be a spiritual experience. Such work is not merely about spiritual contemplation, but itself leads the reader into profound contemplation. It is not merely about the sublime, but itself has a sublime effect on the reader. It is not merely about the mystery of being, but itself heightens the reader’s sense of the mystery underlying the fabric of our daily lives.

Exchanges Literary Journal

Exchanges began in 1989–90, as a project of the Iowa Translation Workshop when I was director. The first issue was cyclostyled, the title being copied from Ulalume González de León’s short story “Intercambios,” translated by Stephanie Lovelady, a student in the Workshop. All texts were presented bilingually. The idea was a simple one: to provide a focus, giving workshop members a sense of working towards publication. Iowa, with its unique combination of Creative Writing Program, Literary Translation Program, and International Writing Program, seemed the ideal location for such a project. As editor of Modern Poetry in Translation, which with Ted Hughes I had founded in England, in 1965, I tended to see mall things in terms of magazine publication allway!--Daniel Weissbort
